Making Sense of Why Bad Things Happen to Good People | God is Close, and He Saves (Psalm 34:18)

Has a difficult turn of events caused you to doubt God? Perhaps, pain and suffering have paralyzed you with fear. In order to make sense of bad things happening to good people, Perspective Number Five is: God is close, and He saves. Even though trying moments come our way, God remains near to protect us. David penned: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

Are you brokenhearted from the storms of life? God is close. He senses your pulse. He counts your breaths. He knows your thoughts. He feels your pain. He grieves with you, but He doesn’t stop at the intimate connection with your heart. He offers something more.

Are you crushed in spirit? Do you feel like you have nowhere to turn? Perhaps, those closest to you have abandoned you. You once considered them as inseparable friends, but now it seems as though they never really knew you. At least, they choose to give that impression. As a result, you are prepared to give up. Listen closely. God saves those who are crushed in spirit.

God will protect you from yourself. He will guard you from the enemy. He will restore your relationship with Him, offering you peace to bring to your conflict with those around you. He will give you joy: the deep internal acceptance that your loving, wise, and gracious Heavenly Father is, thoughtfully and with purpose, orchestrating each and every event in your life, including the bad, to shape your heart to be like Christ.

This week, memorize David’s words when He was brokenhearted and crushed in spirit from his sin against God: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me” (Psalm 51:10-12). Trust in the One who can set you free.
