What is the focal point of your eyes? We are reminded God hates eyes that sin (see Proverbs 6:17). Still, when the day’s images replay in our minds, they often include what we have seen on the internet, whether wise or foolish.

Our culture, especially millennials, is bombarded by social media images on a daily basis. Each month the number of active users skyrocket nearing two billion on Facebook, 700 million on Instagram, and 328 million on Twitter. When we place smartphones in our children’s hands, we make them accessible 24/7. Approximately 20 percent of all teenagers have texted or posted nude or semi-nude photos or videos of themselves, and 39 percent of all teens have posted or texted sexually suggestive messages (The National Campaign).

To win the battle for our children’s eyes, here are four helpful tools to wisely navigate social media:

(1) Pre-approve all persons who can contact your teenager.
(2) Provide absolutely no connection with the real world such as an address or telephone number via social media.
(3) Plan how to shut down your student’s site before you start it. Realize the risk of posted information that can always be retrieved.
(4) Prepare a prospective employer-approved webpage. Employers use social media sites to investigate and verify the credibility of resumes.

Solomon promised the benefits of seeking God’s street smarts: “For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you” (Proverbs 2:10-11). This promise covers our eyes.
