Have you given any thought to preparing a will? Most of us don’t think much about this necessary task, assuming that it can be done later when we are old. Now, here’s a deeper question, and the answer might sting a bit. How often do you intentionally invest wisdom into your children? When asked what he would share if he could tell all of Athens one thing, Aristotle was quoted as saying, “Why do you scratch and crawl and look under every stone for money, yet spend so little time with your children to whom you will give it all in the end?”

When we exhibit a wise and generous heart, we give a spiritual and, sometimes, financial inheritance to our children. Solomon offered, “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous” (Proverbs 13:22). The inheritance of wisdom is paramount, which is why Solomon said that a wise servant would actually rule over a foolish son: “A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son, and will share the inheritance as one of the brothers” (Proverbs 17:2).

A financial inheritance unaccompanied with a wise spiritual inheritance will destroy most children. Solomon informed, “An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning will not be blessed in the end” (Proverbs 20:21).

This week, spend time with your children to whom you will give everything when you die. Choose a verse in Proverbs to discuss with them. Ask for their insights, as you waive your resources to the next generation.
