Sinful Desires

Sin is a desire for any life apart from God. It attempts to find significance, contentment, control, and security in everything else, but Him. The more we try to find these apart from God the more insignificant, discontent, out of control, and insecure we become. Our search is right, yet often times we just look in the wrong places.

Our desires are not for our gratification, not their elimination, but for our transformation. We need to connect our search to the answer of forgiveness and Lordship, found only by grace through faith in the Restorer, Jesus Christ.

Paul described how we find this transformation: “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the LORD out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22).

When we flee our evil desires of proudly searching for satisfaction apart from Christ, we humbly turn with a pure heart to the Restorer where we find true satisfaction of our desires. Righteousness is what is right in God’s sight, which is truth that satisfies our desire for security. Faith is trusting in God rather than ourselves for control, which is power. Love is self-sacrificial serving where we discover our ultimate significance. Peace is absence of strife where two become held together as one, satisfying our desire for contentment.

Today, focus on the search for your heart’s transformation in Christ alone by memorizing Paul’s life-changing words.
