Do you struggle with insecurity? It might be the result of where you search to be secure.

Solomon pursued money for the sake of security (see Ecclesiastes 5:10-20). He was wealthier than any other king on the planet (see 1 Kings 10:23). In our search for security, we either pursue one or the other. “The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents” (1 Kings 10:14). This is the equivalent of 49,950 pounds, or about 25 tons. Solomon’s annual income in gold alone exceeded $1.2 billion in today’s value.

Money is pride’s measurement of our giftedness. Wisdom is humility’s measurement of our godliness, Christ in us. Solomon observed: “Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves the life of its possessor” (Ecclesiastes 7:12). Security connotes “safety, refuge, or a sanctuary.” When we seek security from money, we buy into the empty promise that financial security will someday allow us to enjoy our wealth, mistakenly believing that a certain amount of money will always be true to meet our needs. Unfortunately, someday never comes because financial security doesn’t exist. Instead, God designed us to enjoy life with Him as we go, discovering true security in a relationship with the One who is always the same (see Hebrews 13:8). Our desire for security will only be satisfied in Jesus Christ, who is the Truth of God (see John 14:6).

Are you seeking life apart from God in the attempt to achieve financial security only to feel more insecure? Surrender that to Christ. Ask Him to give you the joy that comes from trusting in Him. He will reshape your heart to be like His and provide the truth in your heart that He will indeed supply all your needs according to the riches of His glory (see Philippians 4:19).
