Do you value your mother and father as priceless sources of wisdom? As adults, we have a tendency to become independent from our parents to a fault, often forgetting they have already endured the season of life that lies ahead of us. In his third pillar of a God-honoring and loving family, Solomon commanded: “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding. The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!” (Proverbs 23:22-25).
When we prioritize seeking wisdom in the midst of our parenting, careers, friendships, and ministries, we pursue every resource readily available to help us shrewdly apply our relationship with God to our circumstances. One of the greatest resources available to us is our parents. They represent our secret agents, ready, willing, and able to offer guidance for any conflict we face. Godly parents tend to know us best, love us beyond measure, and wholeheartedly desire the Lord’s best for us. Tapping into their life-experiences will empower us with a safe and sound outlook to help us take our next steps of wisdom amidst any challenge. When two objects attempt to occupy the same space at the same time, we can reach out to our parents for insights only they can give.
Before your next big decision, call, email, text, or visit your mom and dad. You will be amazed at their loving objectivity, wisdom, and counsel. Even if your career is substantially different than they have experienced, their perspective can prove to be quite valuable as you utilize the secret agents God gave you. If you have a broken relationship with your parents, pray for them and seek God’s guidance for reconciliation. If your mother and father are no longer with you, connect with someone from their generation to breathe wisdom into your life. The Wise King will fill your hearts with joy.
